Sea Change
Project type
Hand-colored Linocut
Date
2026
Location
Charlottesville
This multicolored print edition was inspired by the
featured passage from Sea Change, a moving book by Amanda
Leland and James Workman, of fishermen banding together for
the common purpose of changing industry habits and restoring
the environments to sustainable levels in their fishing community.
A vibrant Red Snapper (Lutjanus purpureus) hovers above a
churning aqua surf. The carving of the whole is reminiscent of
Edo era Japanese woodblock prints. The border framing the scene
features cartouches that contain specimens of the dietary habits of
the red snapper. Starting from the bottom left and moving
counter clockwise: Arrow Squid (Loligo plei), Longeye Shrimp
(Squilla empusa), Brown Rock Shrimp (Sicyonia brevirostris),
Tomtate (Haemulon aurolineatum), Striped Anchovies (Anchoa
hepsetus). Above the waters, the text of the passage also features
undulating qualities, swaying gently above the changing tide.
