Fatter Fat Toad

Project type

Printmaking

Date

2010

Location

Faber, Virginia

Many years ago, I had a guard toad. Guard toads appear frequently near entrances to buildings and are said to protect the household and bring great fortune. My little guard toad would puff herself up great and big when I initially began to interact with her. It's a defense mechanism to appear bigger than she actually was. She'd puff herself up into the large disk but then settle in for a meal of worms from my composting worm bin. She would always be nearby during the day and climb up onto the porch at night to catch bugs that would be attracted to the kitchen lights. Every winter for about 3 or 4 years, she would dig herself a little hole under the wooden porch steps and bury herself away for the winter. Each spring, she would emerge, rail thin, and I would be ready for her with a nice meal. And then, my heart was heavy when one year she didn't emerge. I had a photo of her doing her puff routine and I used that to create a linocut in her memory.
