At a young age Lana became obsessed with ancient Egyptian art and hieroglyphics. While researching, she became mesmerized by the surface pattern of star glyphs on the ancient Egyptian goddess, Nut. The diety is often depicted stretching over murals in temple walls or tomb ceilings and is clothed in a pattern of five-sided stars. Known as “seba,” the star with five points is a simple glyph of five lines. In repetition, it is a sea of sparkling, undulating pattern.

Lana wanted to try this surface pattern and found that the act of creating these patterns is deeply reflective and offered a very calming effect. Unlike much of her work which is
very much engineered, this act of repeating a simple star pattern relieved her from focus and allowed her mind to relax. Dot artists experience the same meditation. These works reflect this practice and are often paired with objects Lana finds in the natural world. Lana views them as both a meditation and also a practice in reliquary construction. Feathers, bones, shells, and other wonders accompany the stars as anchors for existence.
