Corvus sanzuwu
Some may say that this piece belongs in the book arts or illustration section but it was born in a place that the essence of my creative spirit dwells so it is residing here. Physically, this piece resides at the Trout Museum of Art in Appleton, WI. In 2014, I participated in the Strathmore Pass the Journal Project. The project was a round robin of sorts in that 12 Strathmore sketch books were released into the wild to be filled with works as artists worked a spread and then passed it on to another willing artist of their choice. I got to work in a book called "Pulp" and I was inspired to fill it with an illustration of Corvus sanzuwu, the scientific name of the three-legged crow in ancient asian sun mythology.
As the story goes, there were 10 sun crows that would light in the fabled Fusang mulberry and take turns flying down and grazing on the grasses of immortality. I admit, what started as a sketch turned into a full blown painting complete with a glaze of translucent gold for sun halos around each crow. This was a beloved project and I'm glad it is housed amongst other talented artists.
