The Virginia Center for the Book took inspiration from climate change for their project in 2023. I worked with a team of collaborators to bring the work to life. This description for the book was, "As a result of profound climate change, newly revealed archaeological and paleontological finds are resurfacing across the globe. Member artists in the Book Arts Program at the Virginia Center for the Book have worked collaboratively to create a faux scientific field journal filled with fictitious accounts of artifacts that might have been discovered closer to home, along the silty banks of the Rivanna River."
The book itself was printed on a paper that was made with bark inclusions to mimic the silty habit of the Rivanna River. The talented Lotta Helleberg dyed our canvas fabric book covers with mud she had retrieved from the banks of the river.
Lotta and I also collaborated on our own contribution to the book in the form of a documentation of a fictitious plant, Aurora tincturia. We came up with a fictitious field report and I created the illustrations of the specimen. Lotta dyed a sample of wool with poke weed berries. We both printed the pages together to add to this beautiful collection. We color matched the ink in our pages to the poke weed magenta and the earthy tones of the Rivanna River water.
